Tooth Enamel

You probably already know that the hard outer shell responsible for protecting your teeth is called enamel. But did you know that tooth enamel has no living cells? That means the body has no means to repair chipped, cracked or eroded tooth enamel. Tooth erosion is quite common, but there are things you can do to help prevent it. In addition to environmental causes, take a look at these Top 12 Causes of Dental Erosion.

4)  SUGARY FOODS

Now What?

Through healthy diet selections and moderation, much progress can be made to limit damaging acids from eroding tooth enamel. Limiting acidic food and drinks to mealtimes, using a straw for drinking, and regular brushing is also helpful. Tooth enamel becomes softer for a bit after eating or drinking. That’s why it is recommended to wait an hour or so before brushing. In this time, calcium-rich saliva works to restore the enamel to its previous density. Be sure to check with your doctor about alternative medications that do not harm tooth enamel.
