April is finally upon us which not only means warmer weather, but more time outside. Spring sports are starting and consequently enough, April is National Facial Protection Month.
Spring often brings a flood of patients suffering with head, mouth and facial injuries resulting from sports-related accidents to doctors’ offices and emergency rooms. Many oral and facial injuries can be easily prevented with the use of sports safety equipment like helmets and mouth guards.
The National Youth Sports Safety Foundation forecast last year that over 3 million teeth would be knocked out as the result of youth sporting events. What we find most concerning about this is that dentists found that about 67% of parents said their children DO NOT wear mouth guards during sporting activities!
The NYSSF reports that athletes who do not wear mouth guards are 60% more likely to damage their teeth.
Parents: MAKE SURE YOUR CHILDREN ARE PROTECTED!
Some parents are not education on what sports require mouth guards because the list is constantly expanding to include martial arts, boxing, football, volleyball, softball, cycling, and even cheerleading!
Do yourself and your children a favor – make sure their mouth is protected this spring (and all year round)
